Sawadee Khrap - สวัสดีครับ
Doing
nothing – exactly that has been Steffi's biggest wish at her
birthday today January 19th.
So it is great that we arrived here in Bangkok already yesterday to
have a day „off“ today. After a relaxed morning we both go to the
hairdresser and Steffi enjoys a footcare too and returns with green
painted toenails! In the afternoon we walk to a small park at the
riverbank of Chao Praya, watching the sunset. Small boats swinging
in time with the waves, big ones get pulled by haulers in snail pace
over the river. Back to the Soi Ram Buttri street we find a nice Italian restaurant, eat some pasta and get a good cocktail on our way
„home“. Not too late we go to bed, as we have a nice
appointment tomorrow morning!...
The sky of Bangkok is still dark when our alarm clock rings. At 6.20 a.m. the plane with Steffi's parents on bord is scheduled to touch down at the Bangkok airport. Around 1 more hour we have to wait at the arrivals before we can hug each other, some tears of happiness run down the cheeks. Nobody has ever expected that Waltraud and Dieter will visit us on our journey – but now they are in front of us!
We hire a taxi that should drive us to the town Ayutthaya, around 100 km north of the airport. Although we underlined at the taxi stand that the destination is Ayutthaya city, the taxi driver brings us to the Ayutthaya road in Bangkok first. Again we try to explain where we want to go and finally he takes the highway towards north. At 10.30 a.m. we arrive in Ayutthaya where our driver has to ask many of his colleagues before he finally finds our hotel „This Old Palace“. As it is too early to get the rooms we enjoy a breakfast at the terrace – a good place to get used to the heat for Waltraud and Dieter. Now it is time for Steffi to unwrap the birthday gifts brought from home and she is delighted by the surprises and greetings. At noon we can check into our rooms where we relax and sleep for some hours.
In
the afternoon we walk into the city, draw some cash and buy drinks
before we visit the Wat Ratchaburana with it's high Prangs (that look
like beehives for Dieter). Back at our Resort we have dinner with Pad
Thai and Curry and go on a Tuk-Tuk night-tour afterwards. During
short breaks we see the illuminated temples Wat
Kasattrathisat Worawihan, Wat
Chai Watthanaram, Wat
Phra Si Sanphet, Mongkhon Bophit, Ma
Hat and Ratchaburana.
Back at the hotel we have a shandy and do a skype call with Nadine
and Markus, this has been an impressive day.The sky of Bangkok is still dark when our alarm clock rings. At noon we can check into our rooms where we relax and sleep for some hours.
Steffi's parents really enjoy to
have breakfast at the terrace in the sun – what a contrast to the
German winter! Wat Na Phra Men is close to our accomodation and a
monastry that is still in use. We see nuns and monks and numerous
offerings and incense sticks are placed in front of the altars. A
group of pupils are among the visitors that might be on a school-trip
to this sacred place. It is around noon when we leave the monastry
and walk over the lawn to the kings palace, that mainly consists
(like many other historical buildings) of ruin. Before we head for
lunch we visit Wat Phra Si Sanphet and the big, golden Buddha statue
in Wat Mongkhon Bophit. At the market next to our place for lunch
Waltraud decides for a nice sun hat, something good to have in this
climate.
The next destination is Wat
Mahathat, that we have seen during yesterday's evening tour from far
away already. The main attraction is the Buddha head that is clasped
by the roots of an old tree.We hire a Tuk-Tuk that brings us to the boat landing of the main channel around the city. For 1,5 hours we have a nice river cruise watching many of the temples in the evening sunlight. We cross a lock and stop at the Wat Chai Watthanaram for a short walk around the building. Back at the point where we started we stroll over the night market before a Tuk-Tuk brings us back to the hotel.
The alarm clock rings early
today as we want to travel on! Together with two French, Marielle and
Francois we share a minibus for 1000 Baht (around 25 EUR) to
Sukhothai. We have some nice conversation with them, thus the 6 hours
travel time passes quickly. Arrived in the Lotus Village we have some
salad and fruit shakes and a short lunch-break to recreate. At 5 p.m.
we walk into the center of New-Sukhothai. First along the river and
market and finally the night-market that is the place where we find a
massage studio. So this will be the next Thai experience: Steffi and
I get stretched during a classic Thai massage, Waltraud and Dieter
enjoy a foot massage. After 1 hour of sport and relaxation we are
hungry and go into a street kirchen close to the night market.
Together we order 3 fish dishes: One fried fish, another one steamed
with garlic and the third one comes with a lemon-mint-chilli sauce.
This dinner has been so opulent that we share the mandatory dessert
(banana pancake).
Almost
all of the sights in Sukhothai are in the historic part of the city,
Old-Sukhothai. The local bus is the means of transportation to get
there. Once arrived we rent bicycles as this is a great way to get
around in the historical park of Sukhothai. The park
covers the area of the ancient capital of Kingdom Sukhothai (13th
to 15th
century). Numerous remains of buildings and temples can be visited.
The ruins of Wat Mahathat and Wat Traphang Ngoen are close to each
other. Wat Mahathat has once been the central and thus the most
important temple of the kingdom, the large towers and a big Buddha
statue are still in good shape. After we had a short coffee-break we
cycle on to Wat Sa Si that is surrounded by water channels. We visit
Wat Tra and the statue of King Ramkhamhaeng and cycle on to the
elephant-temple Wat Sorasak and to the Ta Pha Daeng shrine.
Enough temples for today, we
give back our bikes and take the bus back to the new town. During
dinner in the Dream Café we meet (by chance) Marielle and Francois
again, it will get a funny evening and we're somewhat surprised how
good Steffi's parents can talk in English, amazing!
After breakfast we catch again
the bus with wooden benches to Old-Sukhothai. We rent bikes to visit
the temples (remains) that are located north of the historical parc.
By crossing an old bridge we get to Wat Phra Phai Luang and wander
around the old walls. The next historical building on the way is Wat
Si Chum. A huge sitting Buddha, that we can already see from outside
is the main point of interest. So we safe 100 Baht admission that we
will spend to see the smaller sites, west of the historical park.
Together with Steffi I climb the mountain of Wat Saphaan Hin, despite
the heat of the day. A tall standing Buddha is inside the walls and a
good view to the surrounding area pays back the effort that we have
done. On our way back to the starting point we cycle along remains of
different temples. Once arrived we have some Pad Thai at a street
kitchen and get back to New Sukhothai by bus. After everybody had a
short rest, we get once more to the massage salon where we've been 2
days ago. This time Steffi and Dirk enjoy the foot massage whereas
Dieter get's an oil massage and Waltraud a massage with a herbal
compress.
In a restaurant at the night
market we continue our exploration through the Thai cuisine and call
Christa for her birthday. In the early morning the alarm-clock starts our day. After breakfast we get to the town's bus station by taxi. With a big doubledeck bus we drive via Tak towards north to Chiang Mai. It takes 5,5 hours until we arrive at the central bus station and another short ride by a Songthaew to our hotel Villa SanPee Seua. This place (north of the city center) has been recommended by Marielle and Francois. We are happy to get a free room upgrade: the family suite that we've booked is now replaced by the family appartment with 3 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a big living room and balcony – we like it very much :)
With the shuttle bus of the hotel we get back in the center to the Riverside Restaurant. With good food we enjoy the nice atmosphere during sunset. On foot we explore a small part of the big night-market and book a minibus with driver for tomorrow to visit different places north of the city. Back in the hotel we drink a shandy and go to bed.
We have a great breakfast in the garden of the hotel next to the river and are a bit suprised how cold the morning temperatures in northern Thailand are. The second surprise is that we see our friends Marielle and Francois during breakfast - great. At 8.30 we get picked up by our driver for todays tour. With his well pronounced English he is not only the driver, he will be a great tour-guide too. The first stop is the elephant camp Mae Sa-valley, where the animals put hats on our heads, kiss and hug us, you should not miss the pictures!
Some time later it is bathing time for the strong pachyderms. During the elephant-show the animals display their abilities. Once used as woodworkers in the teak wood forests, they play basket- and football, are painting pictures and show how they pulled and piled up the teak wood trunks. The tour continues to the Queen Sirikit botanical garden. During a walk our guide shows us different banana species and other tropical plants. We walk on to the tropical greenhouse and the house of the orchids that we visit. After a short lunch-break we visit the remaining greenhouses and walk to the natural history museum close by. On our way back to Chiang Mai we make another stop at the orchid farm. This place is'nt that interesting for us, since the visitor sees only the orchid culture - neither explanations, nor plates. Dirk and Dieter are coughing hard tonight so we decide to take it easy and stay in the hotel this evening.
Already yesterday evening we booked the same tour as our French friends to spend a day with them. Already during breakfast we meet in the garden and at 8.30 a.m. we get into the crowded minibus that brings us to the Doi Inthanon national park. The first stop for the group of 12 is the Sirithan waterfall that is 50 m high. A Karen tribal village is the next stop. During the walk in the village we have the impression that everything that is done around us is only set up for the tourists – we are on very touristic ways today. From there the tour goes on to the Vachirathan waterfall that is 70 m high where we have a lunch-break. The next destination is the 2565 m high Doi Inthanon mountain, Thailands highest peak. As the top is covered by rainforest, despite a plate there's nothing to see. Instead we follow a small path, paved by wood, that makes a turn through the forest. 200 m below this point we stop at the royal chedis that have been built for the 60th birthday of the Queen Sirikit (1992) and the King Bhumibol (1987). The chedis are surrounded by a nice garden from where it is possible to have a view into the distance. It takes about 3 hours to return to Chiang Mai. A little bit tired and exhausted we have dinner with Marielle and Francois directly at our hotel. Unfortunately the dishes are not that good today and are served sequentially – it seems like the cook is a little bit overstrained with the order from a group of 6.
Today we can finally sleep late! Unfortunately it happens that Dirk has to cough in the morning and thus cut into Steffi's wonderful dreams. The air temperatures are somewhat higher during our late breakfast. With the shuttle bus we get into the city center and make a hotel booking for our next destination. Thereafter we visit Wat Phra Singh where the monks have their lunch during our visit. We are somewhat irritated by the meditating monks that do not move at all. Are they dead or are these wax figures? Along the street we stroll to Wat Phan Tao with it's impressive teak wood buildings. In direct neighbourhood we visit Wat Chedi Luang that is famous for it's tall, partially collapsed Chedi. We have a coffee at the side of the street, Dieter goes to the hairdresser for a new cut before we return to the hotel for a nap. By Songthaew we return to the city center in the evening to go out for dinner to the Dash! Restaurant. While sitting in the garden of the Teak-house we enjoy the great food and great service. On our way back along a small channal Steffi's mum get's a little bit frightened by some rats but finally we return safe at the hotel. Tonight we have to pack our belongings again and go to bed early as the alarm-clock is set to 6 a.m.
