Happy Birthday Dieter! |

schmeckt erstaunlich gut!
In der deutschen Bäckerei "Nang Sabai" At the German bakery "Nang Sabai" |

From north to the far south
of the country to Ko Lanta
Today
we want to travel a huge distance! After we've seen the rainforest,
elephants and historic places in the north of Thailand, we take a
plane that takes us to the southern part of the country. At 8.30 a.m.
the plane, operated by Nok Air takes off and touches down 2 hours
later in Hat Yai. To avoid 2 stop-overs and to safe some time we
decide to take a taxi that brings us to Hua Hin, a place at the west
coast. The next means of transportation is a side-car motorbike (that
is pretty good loaded with the driver, four passengers and our
luggage) which brings us to the island Lanta (Ko Lanta). Another 30
minutes on the island and we arrive at the Lanta Pavillion Resort,
that we've booked in advance. Unfortunately the bungalows and the
common areas are not in the shape like displayed on the internet, so
we are somewhat disappointed. A short walk brings us to the beach and
even if there are a lot of rocks during low tide, we find a way to
the water to take a swim. The sunset is over and we prepare to go for
dinner. At a restaurant, directly at the beach we order grilled
potatoes, chicken- and shrimps roasted on a spit and a red snapper
that comes from the BBQ grill too – delicious! Along the
illuminated bars and restaurants at the beach we walk back to our
bungalows and fall asleep pretty soon.
Steffi
gets up early today and buys a little cake and a candles for Dieters
birthday today. We enjoy our breakfast with ocean view and the sound
of the waves. With a rented scooter Steffi and I are driving further
towards north to check other beaches and other accomodations for the
next days. Around noon we're back and Steffis parents are back from
their walk at the beach too. We let them know about what we've seen
and together with Waltraud I check our favorite accomodation and make
a booking for them from tomorrow. The temperatures are already more
than 30 degrees when we make our way over the hot sand for a dip into
the ocean. With some light snacks (salad, fruit shakes) we have lunch
and relax in the Green Chilli Restaurant. Back at our place we write
some lines for the Blog, diary and Waltraud writes some postcards.
With a coffee in our hands we have relaxed conversations while
watching over the ocean. Once more I get back on the motorbike to
organize Dieters main birthday present. Our gift is a Thai cooking
class that we will do altogether, starting already tomorrow
afternoon. :)
Unfortunately
Dieter does not feel fine in the evening during our dinner at the
beach. At the time when we have a cocktail, he drinks tea. The
delicious tuna we have to eat by three, as he does not feel good, we
hope it will get better tomorrow.
In
the morning everybody is fine again and we pack our things as we will
move to our new place around noon. A pick-up taxi takes us to the
new bungalows that are part of the Palm Beach Resort, although they
are a bit apart from it. As the cottages are 400m away from the
beach, one scooter per bungalow is included in the rent of 1500 Baht
per day and house. We make ourselves comfortable and relax during
noon with A/C on. At 3.30 in the afternoon we drive to the cooking
school „Time for Lime“, Dieters birthday present. For welcome we
get a lemongrass-cocktail and at 4p.m. the class starts. First we get
an introduction in the Thai cuisine. 4 different taste are
differentiated: sweet, salty, sour and spicy. With the snack
„Thailand in one bite“ we can try all this and it's delicious. We
get to know, how different spices are cut and why, what ingredients
are just to boil and which are to eat and after one hour of theory we
move over to the cutting boards. At first we prepare a red curry
paste. Afterwards a papaya-salad and a Pad Thai. In a first course we
eat and enjoy all this – so far, so good! Back at our pans and pots
we prepare a fried morning glory with oyster sauce and fish with
sweet-sour-spicy sauce and eat all these things by ourselves. In the
last 8 hours we have learned, tried and ate a lot and are happy and
exhausted while driving back to our bongalows at 10.30 p.m.
Yesterday
morning we got already our bread from the German backery „Nang
Sabai“, today we get on the scooters altogether and have our
breakfasts directly there. Especially for Steffi and myself it is
something special to get rye bread and whole grain rolls for
breakfast which is very hard to get here in south-east asia. With
jam, liver sausage, ham for topping it is just great. With Ina, the
owner of the bakery, we have a great chat and she explains a lot
about the island and tells us where to find the doctor, the pharmacy
and the letter box and tells us about trips we can do at the island.
We agree that she arranges a boat trip for us at the day after
tomorrow. On the way back we stop at the pharmacy, the post office
and the supermarket. Back at our bungalows the others relax a bit
while I visit a doctor, since my coughing did not really went away in
the past days. Via the small path behind our cottages we walk along
the 5 star hotel to the beach. Steffi and Waltraud take a swim while
Dieter and I (the 2 patients) watching the ocean (we're chilling!).
For
the evening we dress up and go by scooter to Linda's Restaurant. In
this restaurant a Swede is the „chef de la cuisine“, prices are
more European-like but the food is great too. Especially the desert
(iced blueberry-cheesecake and chocolate fudge with caramel icecream)
is delicious. Back at the bungalows we play cards – luckily there
are not much mosquitos around here.
After
the nice breakfast, Steffi, I and Dieter with Waltraud get on the
scooters and drive towards the south of the island. We leave the
village Kling Nin behind us and ride uphill into the mountains east
of us. At the highest elevation we find a viewpoint from which we can
see over the andaman sea. This is a great place to have a coffee and
rest a bit. Back on the scooters we drive down to the east coast and
arrive at the Lanta old town. During a walk we explore the wooden
houses that are built on poles and their design reminds us a bit of
buildings in the „wild west“ of the older days (we got inspired
by Ina from the German bakery). Back at the westcoast we drive
further towards south on the search for a beautiful beach. At the
Kantiang bay we do not find a nice place in the shadow so we continue
to the Klong Jark bay, where we relax on hamocks and deck chairs in
the shadow of gardenias. A dip in the water, walking in the sand and
having a snack in the beach bars is what we enjoy in the entire
afternoon. Back at our place we have dinner in one of the numerous
beach restaurants. Todays cuisine offers Indian, Thai and European
dishes – so everybody should find something that suits his taste.
This
morning we have again our breakfast in the German backery „Nang
Sabai“. Then we head on with some chilled drinks on our scooters to
the northern Lanta island, Ko Lanta Noi. The ferry takes us over to
the oterh side and we ride on to a place called Loh Yai. Captain Noi
is already expecting us in a small restaurant. On todays tour he
takes us on his longtail-boat to the eastern andaman sea and to the
mangrove forest. On the drive through the forest that grows in the
brackish water we meet a troop of monkeys that we feed with bananas.
The only thing we have to observe is to keep our hats, cameras and
other small things safe and secure, otherwise they might get stolen
by the monkeys. We see another troop during the continuation of the
tour but this one is barefaced and thus dangerous so we better keep
on going. The next stop is Bubu island, where we have a break for 2
hours to make a picnic, take a walk and to sleep a bit. At the coast
of the Talabeng island, captain Noi maneuvers the boat into a
flowstone cave and further on along the rocky coast of the island. On
the way back we encounter some higher waves but everybody is fine,
when we arrive at the port where we started. Along the coastal road,
along rubber plantations we drive back to our bungalows. Tonight we
have dinner in the Thai Cat beach-restaurant with fresh fish from the
BBQ while listening to the ocean sound.
For
breakfast we are back at the German bakery to report from our great
tour yesterday. Later on we are back at the beach and enjoy the
opportunities. Today even Dieter and I are back in the ocean, as our
cold went away again. During noon we make a walk to the end of the
bay and back before we're going to the bungalows to enjoy some colder
temperatures. Fresh fruits such as Mango, bananas and melons are our
lunch snack and then it's time for a nap. During this time I go once
more to the GP, I get some more medicine for the next days and Steffi
searches for some nice accomodation in Bangkok. At 5 in the
afternoon I'm back with cake and coffee from the German bakery –
what a surprise! During sunset we have another swim and make a
booking for the boat tomorrow that should bring us to Krabi. For
another time we go to the Thai Cat restaurant for dinner and enjoy
grilled mackerel, gunnel and baked potatoes with the fantastic view
over the ocean.
