Ab heute geht es dort hin, wo der gute Tee wächst. Wir lassen unsere Räder und einen Großteil der Taschen im Hotel einlagern und laufen, nur mit Rackpack und Rucksack beladen zum Busbahnhof von Ipoh. Wir kaufen Tickets und da noch ein wenig Zeit ist, gehen wir zum Frühstück in ein indisches Restaurant und essen Roti und Nasi Goreng. Ab 11 Uhr sitzen wir im Bus der sich über zahlreiche Serpentinen den Berg hinauf in die Cameron Highlands schlängelt. Dieses Gebirge erstreckt sich in der Höhenlage um die 1500 m über dem Meeresspiegel – wir sind heilfroh, die Räder in Ipoh stehen gelassen zu haben. Die Fahrt geht weiter durch eine Landschaft voller Gewächshäuser soweit das Auge reicht bis wir schließlich um 13 Uhr in Tanah Rata ankommen wo wir ein Zimmer in Fathers Guesthouse für 70 Ringit pro Nacht beziehen. Der „Verdauungsspaziergang“ nach dem Mittagessen führt uns zum Parit Wasserfall. Dabei wird uns bei „nur noch“ 20 – 25°C so kühl, dass wir uns einen langärmligen Pulli drüber ziehen müssen. :)

Auf dem Rückweg stoppen wir noch an einer Erdbeerfarm, wo wir jetzt im März unsere ersten Erdbeeren dieses Jahr essen! Den Abend lassen wir ruhig ausklingen und schlafen (seit langem mal wieder) bei schön kühlen Temperaturen ein.

Teeernte - Tea crop

Eingepackt in warmen Klamotten frühstücken wir auf dem Balkon bevor wir um 8.45 Uhr zur „Mossy Forest Tour“ mit einem Landrover Jeep abgeholt werden. Zusammen mit einer kleinen Gruppe fahren wir zunächst zu den Teeplantagen hinter Brichang. Wir sehen Teepflücker bei ihrer Arbeit und erfahren, dass grüner, weißer und schwarzer Tee von ein und derselben Pflanze stammt. Die Verarbeitung, besser gesagt der Grad der Fermentierung, bestimmt, welcher Tee es am Ende wird. Außerdem wissen wir jetzt das guter Tee, viel UV Strahlung braucht und er daher in großer Höhe am besten gedeiht.

 Vom 2032 m hohen Gunung (Berg) Brichang hat man einen Klasse Blick auf die umliegenden Berge mit ihren zahlreichen Teeplantagen und Gewächshäusern.

 Leicht unterhalb am Berghang liegt der Mooswald (Mossy Forest). Durch das immerfeuchte Klima (oft sind die Bergketten von Wolken umhüllt) und Wärme sind die Bäume fast vollständig von Moosflechten überzogen. Das ganze Ökosystem bildet einen wichtigen Wasserspeicher. Auf dem Weg über Holzplanken durch diesen erwunschenen Wald bekommen wir auch Orchideen und fleischfressende Pflanzen (monkey pitchers) zu sehen.

„Tea Time“ heißt es beim nächsten Stopp – wir sind bei der BOH Tee-Plantage, einer von vielen hier. In einem Besucherzentrum lernen wir wie der Tee verarbeitet wird. Die 5 Hauptschritte sind Vertrocknung, Rollen, Fermentierung, wieder eine Trocknung und Sortierung. Anschließend genießen wir ein Kännchen bei toller Aussicht über die Bergketten.

Die Schmetterlingsfarm ist der letzte Punkt der Tour. Schmetterlinge in allen Farben fliegen um uns, Blattinsekten, Nashornkäfer und große Hibiskusblüten sind zu sehen.
Wir haben mit dieser Tour zwar viel innerhalb kürzerster Zeit gesehen und das war sehr interessant, aber auf den ausgetretenen Touristenpfaden und in einer solch großen Gruppen haben wir uns nicht  wirklich wohl gefühlt.

Am Nachmittag sind wir zurück in Tanah Rata wo ich mir beim Optiker neue Gläser für die Brille anfertigen lasse. Wir faulenzen, schreiben Tagebuch, gehen was essen und am Abend kann ich mir schon meine „neue“ Brille abholen – endlich wieder kratzerfreie Sich für nur 150 RM, rund 45 EUR.

Wenn möglich, wollen wir noch eine Rafflesia-Blüte (die weltweit größte Blüte) sehen. Leider hat keine der Pflanzen hier in den Wäldern derzeit eine Blüte, da diese innerhalb von wenigen Tagen auch wieder verblühen. Statt dessen erkundige ich mich nach Wanderrouten.

Wir kaufen noch Proviant ein uund dann geht es zu Fuß den Gunung Jasar (1696 m) hinauf. Auf dem steilen Pfad durch den Regenwald dienen die Baumwurzeln immer wieder als gute Stufen. An einer Lichtung angekommen gibt es eine Picknickpause.

Gerade wollen wir wieder weiter, da kommen zwei alte Bekannte ebenfalls den Wanderweg hinauf gelaufen: es sind Matze und Doro, die Zwei, die wir schon bei Janjie in Peking getroffen haben.

Wir verlängern kurzum unsere Pause, da wir uns viel zu erzählen haben :) So geht es gemeinsam weiter zum Gipfel des Gunung Perdah, zur Wetterstation und schließlich wieder hinab nach Tanah Rata. 

Zusammen gehen wir einen Tee trinken, essen eine Kleinigkeit – es ist schön mit den beiden zu plaudern. Jeder braucht jetzt erst einmal eine Erholungspause und wir verabreden uns für 2 ½ Stunden später zum Abendessen. Zu Viert bestellen wir uns ein Steam Boat (Brühfondue) und trinken später noch bis tief in die Nacht „Anglia“ Radler auf der Terasse unseres Guesthouses – ein toller Tag mit den Beiden!

Für 18 Ringgit geht es am Vormittag mit dem Bus wieder hinab nach Ipoh. Leider endet diese Fahrt am außerhalb gelegenen Busbahnhof Medan Gopeng. Zunächst sind wir uns unschlüssig wo, wann und ob überhaupt ein Bus in das Stadtzentrum fährt, die Informationen die wir bekommen sind nicht ganz eindeutig. Nach einigem hin- und her kommt schließlich doch noch ein Bus. In einem chinesischen Bistro essen wir lecker Curry und Bratreis. In einem anderen Laden gibt es mit Creme Caramel und Sago Pudding dann auch noch einen leckeren Nachtisch. Um 13 Uhr checken wir wieder im Tunehotel ein, Steffi macht Mittagsschlaf. Am Nachmittag geben wir unsere Dreckwäsche in der Wäscherei ab, gehen Kaffee trinken, schreiben Blog und Tagebuch – gehen also unseren „Pflichten“ nach. 
Abends essen wir bei Pizza Hut – westliches Essen ist auch mal wieder ein kleines Highlight. :)

Cameron Highlands

Today we gonna travel to the place, where good tea is growing. We leave the bicycles and most of our luggage in the hotel in Ipoh and walk to the bus station. After purchasing 2 tickets there is still some time before the bus leaves. Time to have a breakfast with roti and nasi goreng in an indian restaurant.

At 11 a.m. we're in our seats and the bus follows a steep, winding road that leads up into the Cameron Highlands. A range with elevations around 1500 m above sea level – we're really happy that we went up here by bus. The ride continues through a landscape full of greenhouses and at 1 p.m. we finally arrive in Tanah Rata. For 70 Ringit per night we get a room in Fathers Guesthouse. A walk after lunch takes us to the Parit waterfall and this is the moment to recognize finally that it is noticable colder up here. At temperatures of around 20 to 25 degC we even have to wear a sweater! :)

On the way back from the waterfall we stop at one of the numerous strawberry farms to get our first tray full of strawberries this year. The evening is a very relaxed one, we really enjoy nice cool temperatures during the night.

Dressed with warm clothes we have breakfast at the balcony and get picked up by a Landrover jeep a short while later. Yesterday we booked the „Mossy Forest Tour“. In a small group we drive to the tea plantations around Brichang. We watch the tea harvesting and learn that green, white and black tea originates from the same plant. The treatment and the grade of fermentation of the leaves, decides which kind of tea it's gonna be. Moreover we now know that good tea needs a lot of UV rays and thus grows best in high elevations.
From Gunung (mountain-top) Brichang (2032 m) we get a great view at the surrounding mountain range with its tea plantations and greenhouses.
A few meters below the peak we visit the mossy forest. The alltime humid climate and the warm temperatures is a perfect ground for moss to grow at the trees in big scale. The ecosystem serves as an important water storage. The wood paved path guides us through the forest that looks like in a fairy tale. Orchids and insect eating plants are on the way too.
At the next stop of our tour it is „tea time“. Arrived at the visitor center of the BOH tea plantation (one of many plantations here) we learn about the 5 main steps of tea processing. These are withering, rolling, fermentation, drying and sorting. Afterwards we have a cup of tea and enjoy the great sight to the mountians around us.
On the further way we watch 2 man, catching a snake and take it away by motorbike, it might be their dinner? The butterflyfarm is the next stop of our tour. Butterflies in all colours, different insects, „hornbill“ beetles and hibiscus flowers are around us.
In the afternoon we're back in Tanah Rata and I go to the optician to get new lenses. We relax, write diary, go for dinner and then it's already time to pick up my „refurbished“ glasses with new lenses. View without scratches for only 150 RM, around 45 EUR.

If possible we like to see a raflesia blossom (the biggest blossom that exists). The tour agencies know that none of the plants in the surrounding forests has a blossom right now (that is withered within a few days), too sad. Instead we make inquiries about some hiking trails. We get some food and start the hiking tour from the guesthouse up to Gunung Jasar (1696 m). It is a steep path through the rainforest where roots of the big trees serves as perfect steps. Arrived at a clearing, we have a picnic-break.
Just as we want to continue, two old friends get up the path, towards us. What a surprise, Matze and Doro, that we already have met in Beijing at Janjies place! A good reason to extend our break, there's a lot to talk about! :) Together we continue the way up to the peak of Gunung Perdah, further to the weather station and downhill back to Tanah Rata. With a cup of tea and some snacks we tell each other our travelling stories of the last months during the afternoon. All of us need a break but agree to meet again in 2.5 hours for dinner. We order a „steam boat“ for four and have a couple of „Anglia“ beers (a shandy) on the terrace of our guesthouse – what a great day with our friends!

For 18 Ringgit we take the bus back to Ipoh in the morning. Unfortunately the bus terminates at the bus station Medan Gopeng, that is outside the city center. First we do not know if and when a bus leaves from this place to the city center (all the informations we get are not really distinct). After some back and forth we finally find the right bus. It is time for lunch that we get in a chinese kitchen. Curry and fried rice, for dessert caramel cream and Sago pudding. At 1 p.m. we check in our previous hotel and Steffi is having a nap. In the afternoon we get our dirty clothes to the laundry service, get a coffee, write some lines in our diary and for the blog – we do what we call „work“ right now. In the evening we go to Pizza Hut – western food is always a little highlight. :)
