Hier

Relax
and Enjoy in Xingping
We
want to make ourselves comfortable for some days in this little,
beautiful town at the Li river in the in between south-China's karst
mountains. 4 days we stay in "This Old Place" hostel,
sleeping long and having great breakfasts at the rooftop terrace with
the a beautiful scenic view. We enjoy it to have no plans, strolling
around in the narrow streets and at the riverside. There we get
permanently shouts with "Hello Bamboo?", locals asking if
we want to make a boat tour with the traditional bamboo raft – our
bugged answer is alsways "No"!
Instead
we're using the time to read, writing postcards and Emails. The Café
of the hostel offers great local food as for example caramelised
taro, braised tofu or fried river shrimp – we visit them regularly.
The evening we like to spend in the restaurant of the hostel where we
eat the great pizza from the wood-fired oven and watch (own choosen)
movies on a big screen with other travellers. On the first evening
our choice "Momento", on the last day "James Bond –
Casino Royal" is shown.
For
sure, we also made some trips during that time. We're exploring the
historic city center and make a walk at the riverside. The next day
Dirk goes on a tour to the other side of the river. During the time
when Steffi is relaxing he explores a climbing spot and visit a
little monastry that is build into a grotto.
The
highlight during our time in Xingping has been the rock climbing –
no doubt! After I explored the routes the previous day, we rent the
climbing gear and shoes (even in Dirk's size) from the hostel and
take the ferry to cross the river. From there a short walk leads us
through honey pomelo and mandarin plantations to the rock. 2 bolted
routes do excist that we belief are in our capabilities. I'm leading
both climbs and while Steffi secures me. Afterwards she takes the
climbs in toprope. During the exercise we discover that we're not so
much in shape for climbing, we're somewhat afraid. But it was worth
the effort – the view from the top of the climb was just amazing!
Back in the hostel we give back the rented equipment and find out
that is has been for free! There's nothing to pay – a smile and a
"Thank you" is enough – just great!
The
next day is grey and rainy – not so good for a boat ride. Instead we
take our bicycles and ride on our side of the river over small roads
to the Nine-Horse-Fresco-Hill close to Mashan. We discover the
surrounding – Dirk in the direction of the mountains, Steffi at the
riverside. Since it is still raining a bit, we do not cross the river
by ferry to make a walk at the other side (as we planned to do),
instead we cycle back to Xingping. On our way we meet a Dutch
traveller and have a nice conversation. Back in the small town we buy
some souveniers that we plan to send home for Christmas.
After
4 relaxing days, we will continue our tour by bike tomorrow.
