Endlich wieder am Strand Finally arrived at the beach |

Zimmer sehr warm.

Ab und zu geht's auch mal bergauf Every now and then the road at the coast climbs up the mountain |
Heute
unseren 5000. Kilometer.

Behind the Hai Van pass
Baguette,
pain aux chocolat and banana energizes us for todays cycle tour to
the coast. We're leaving Hué through the citadel, that appears to be
really quiet and rural, once being away from the tourist crowds. On
broad and smooth asphalt we're cycling with a good speed to Thuan An. The
way follows the coast line, just behind the beach, so we use the
chance for a refreshing dip in the water and relaxing at the sun
chairs. Next to the small road we see many big and colourful tombs.
Since a while we are looking for a place to sleep tonight,
without success so far. In Vinh An we finally find a small Nha Nghi –
Hotel, where we get a small, basic room – even though the owner did
not speak any English. We take a shower and find a restaurant on the
main road of the small settlement. We order „Lau“ (Vietnamese
Hotpot) with Shrimp, Squid, and small fish-balls, very tasty!
Back at the hotel, a small karaoke party is going on next door – incredible loud and out of tune. But at 10 they finally finish the „concert“ - but it is hard to fall asleep. Without air-condition (only fan) the room stays very warm during the night.

It's
still warm when we have breakfast on the plastic chairs in the yard
of the guesthouse. The only thing that cools us down today is the
wind, while riding the bicycle – facing wind is welcome! The tour
goes through villages with catholic churches that are (although a bit
kitschy) decorated for Christmas and flooded fields further along the
coast line until we reach Lang Co. Without success we search for a
way to the beach, every possible path is already occupied by resort
hotels. Instead we go into a restaurant to fill our growling stomaches.
From there we can already see the mountains of the Hai Van Pass or
Cloud Pass that we have to cross and decide to postpone that to
tomorrow. At the main road we get a nice room with Wifi internet and
successfully get down the price to 150000 Dong (6 EUR). We get into
our swimming suit and (now through one of the resorts) to the beach
where we jump into the big waves.
Dirk is buying some more food and we spend the rest of the evening at the balcony of our room from where we skype with Steffi's home, where not only her parents but also Berthold, Nadine and Markus appear in front of the laptop. Steffi sleeps already while I am doing an English translation for our blog.

Today's
the day where we want to cross the 496 m high Hai Van (Cloud) pass,
that devides Vietnam into the subtropical climate on the northern
side and the tropical climate at its southern side. We start at 10
a.m. and the way goes contineously uphill, starting from sea level.
From time to time relaxing flat pieces, but the sun burns from the
sky and so it gets a good challange. For the passengers in the train
next to us it might be more relaxing but they miss the incredible
views, that we can enjoy from the bicycles. On the way to the top we
celebrate our 5000 km mark by a short photo stop. As we arrived at
the top, we also arrived inside the clouds – that's where the name
comes from! Some remains of the previous wars can be found there, but
we head downhill to the bay of Danang. In a small restaurant next to
the road we get some Com (rice), tofu, spring rolls and fried egg.
Without a city map we make our way through the city and finally get
to the coastline at „China-Beach“. Another 10 km until we arrive
at „Hoa's place“, a typical backpacker hostel. After check-in we
walk to the beach for a refreshing swim and jump in the waves
– I have my camera with me! This evening it is time for Hoa's
„family dinner“ - almost every guest meets at the big table and
we have dinner together. At this place, entirely without internet,
people play guitar and chat until late night – what a great
atmosphere.
Another night without air
condition makes us not sleep that well and we got waken up by the
chatting neighbours in the morning. But this is a good opportunity to
visit the marble mountains, that are close by, in the morning. On the
small mountain range a lot of pagodas and temples have been erected
and some caves can be visited. Although it is not that late the high
temperatures make us sweat a lot during the climb of the mountain. At
noon we're back at the room, take a quick shower, check out and get
on the bicycles – todays destination: Hoi An.
